SCLERAL LENSES

WHAT ARE MONOVISION SCLERAL LENSES ?

Monovision scleral lenses incorporate both your distance and near prescriptions. They are used for those over 40 years old who have developed presbyopia, ie: a need for a reading prescription.

These lenses are designed by using the dominant eye to see distance and the non-dominant eye to see near.

WILL I HAVE CLEAR VISION?

In short, yes! But realistic expectations are important. For one lens to focus at individual points: distance and near, means that your brain chooses which image to use for which task (reading, driving, etc).

You must give your brain 2 weeks to adapt to any type of monovision correction. This is a widely-used technique to get "rid" of glasses for the majority of the time. You may still need readers to see very fine print.

You may also not know that after about age 50, computer prescriptions and reading prescriptions are different, so you may have to pick which one you'd prefer for your monovision and wear glasses for the other.

You may compromise some depth perception with this type of correction because the eyes are working independently so it is not recommended for those who need complete stereopsis for their jobs such as surgeons.
